Times – For English speaking persons, LegalLine is held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month for two (2) shifts. The first shift starts at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m., the second shift starts at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. Consejos Legales, a Spanish-speaking LegalLine is held on the first Thursday of the month from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Once a year on Law Day, LegalLine hours are from noon until 9:00 p.m. It is requested that all participants arrive for their shift at least 15 minutes early and check in with the Houston Bas Association staff member on duty. Because scheduling conflicts may arise, FLS members who are unable to sign-up at a FLS luncheon are encouraged to call the HBA and speak with the LegalLine staff member to sign-up for an available shift or for any shift that may become open.

Sign-Up Procedure – FLS members wishing to sigh-up for LegalLine should call the Houston Bar Association at (713) 759-1133. The HBA keeps a central calendar of available dates and times for FLS members wishing to serve LegalLine.Location and Parking – LegalLine takes place at the offices of the Houston Bar Association located at First City Tower Building, 1001 Fannin, Suite 1300, Houston, Texas, telephone (713) 759-1133. Please see the attached map for the building location and the location of various parking facilities.Food isProvided – The HBA provides food for those participating in LegalLine.Rules for Participation – The public is requested to keep their questions as concise as possible and callers should be reminded that attorneys answering the phone cannot identify themselves and may not be hired. If a LegalLine volunteer determines a caller should hire an attorney, the caller should be referred to the Houston Lawyer Referral Service sponsored by the HBA. Callers who may qualify for legal aid are referred to the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program which is sponsored by the HBA, or to the Gulf Coast Legal Foundation, which is a federally sponsored program. Volunteers assume no liability for their participation in LegalLine.

Luncheon Certificates – Each of the first two (2) members of the FLS who sign-up and actually complete their shift serving LegalLine are entitled to a Luncheon Certificate. The Luncheon Certificate may be redeemed by the holder for the cost of attending a monthly FLS meeting of their choice and must be redeemed within six (6) months of the date of issue. The participant should be sure that the Luncheon Certificate is completed by an HBA staff member at the time the participant completes their shift or once participation is verified by HBA personnel, the certificate will be mailed to the FLS member with a letter thanking them for their participation.

Continuing Legal Education — Annual Drawing – Each of the first two (2) FLS members per shift who sign-up and actually complete their LegalLine shift will receive one (1) chance for each shift they complete which will entitle them to have their name submitted for an annual drawing to receive one of the following:

  • The first name drawn will have the cost of the registration fee paid to attend the next annual State Bar of Texas Advanced Family Law Seminar. Alternatively, the person may have the equivalent cost of other CLE approved family law related seminars reimbursed or paid on their behalf.
  • The second name drawn will have the cost of up to $250.00, of any CLE approved family law related seminar reimbursed or paid on their behalf.
  • Each of the next five (5) names drawn shall each receive a Luncheon Certificate they may redeem to cover the cost of attending a regular monthly FLS meeting of their choice, to be redeemed within six (6) months of issue.
